Joker's Corner

There once was a time when I thought Don Cherry was an amusing hockey figure who stood up for good ol' Canadian values. I was 8. Don, it's time to hang up the tapestry you call a jacket... |
After the season ended, CBC "legend" Don Cherry ranted about Montreal's Alex Kovalev, saying he'd be able to take next season off seeing as how he decided to play this year... obvious anti-Canadiens, anti-Russian sarcasm. I supposed it is Kovalev's fault. After all, if Kovy was from Kitchener, this never would have happened.
Now that the playoffs are underway and the Leafs are on the links, the CBC has decided to grace Canadian viewers with the Habs-Bruins series, but we'd be just as well off watching the game on NESN if all we wanted was the Bruins perspective.
Canada's national broadcaster allows Cherry to get on every night and show blatant bias towards WHOEVER is playing the Canadiens. Saturday night's discourse after Montreal's win was priceless. The refs gave the Bruins "nine-thousand penalties" according to Cherry, but didn't make the calls against the Canadiens. Funny, when Tomas Plekanec was cross-checked from behind, I didn't see the refs send a Bruin to the box.
Don Cherry is no longer relevant to Canadian society and his run as a commentator has run its course. His opinions and attire are stale, despite a paltry attempt to be flamboyant and it's becoming a farce.
Here are just some of the comments recently posted to CBC's website by peeved viewers..
"Don Cherry has always hated the Montreal Canadiens ever since he was coach of the Bruins and denied a Stanley Cup ring. He is still peeved about that. Get over it Don."
"I'm confused, watching the game here in Northern Ontario and it feels like I'm watching an American channel. The commentaries between the first two periods have been all what the Bruins are doing or not doing. You guys really need to remember that CBC stands for Canadien Broadcast Co."
"I get a kick out of Mr.Cherry as much as anyone, but isn't about time he was removed from habs games(unless of course they are playing his beloved Leafs.)? I can handle his Leaf love but watching HNIC and listening to his love of the Bruins is a bit much.Have him comment on the Sens and give Habs fans (there are a few of us here in this great country) Kelly Hrudey."
"Cherry has to go! Cherry has to go! Cherry has to go! Cherry has to go!....do you hear it ? millions of habs fans around the world are all saying the same thing. don , go find bobby orr and sell cars , or something , but get off of hockey night in canada. your rant is trash talk! the bruins and habs games of the 60's and 70's are over....get on with your life man!!!!"
What do you think about Don Cherry? Post your comments and we'll read some of them on the air...try to keep 'em clean.

I have to disagree with your post, Shaun. I actually find myself looking forward to Cherry's perspective on the Coach's Corner every Saturday night no matter how pro-small-town-Ontario, Anti-European, pro-Leafs it is.
While Cherry may seem stale and old fashioned to us, I know he still resonates within certain communities in Canada. Juxtaposed to ultra-modern and multicultural Montreal, Cherry’s opinions seem like a relic to Canada’s past. But the words that come out of Cherry’s mouth, no matter how ignorant and obnoxious, reflect much of what is being said in places like 100 Mile House British Colombia, North Battleford Saskatchewan, Pine Falls Manitoba, and North Bay Ontario, just to name a few. Like it or not, Cherry does indeed represent a swath of Canada’s population.
Furthermore, though I disagree with much of what he says, he provides entertainment. If I want hard-nosed hockey analysis, I’ll listen to a guy like Pierre McGuire. But after 20 minutes of hockey, a little bit of comedy is just what I need. And for God’s sake, the less I have to see of Kelly Hrudey, the better!

Don Cherry is a bigot whose is so biased against Habs in particular and Québec in general, he shouldn't be allowed within 10 feet of a microphone. He never sees anything good in any Hab player and the moRon hasn't the balls to set him straight. I say turf out Ron and Don dumb and dumber show and give the show to Hrudy. Hey, I even have a name for the show: Goalee's corner.
